Pain Management for Laser Tattoo Removal

One of the most common setbacks people face when considering removing a tattoo is how painful the process will be.  The best way we can describe it is hot rubber bands snapping on the skin, or if you are cooking and get some oil splash onto the skin.  However, laser tattoo removal is very fast, usually only lasting (depending on the size of the tattoo) anywhere between a few seconds to a few minutes. While the laser procedure is not painless, there are ways to minimize the intensity and make the sensation a lot more tolerable. There are a few methods that can be used before, during and after treatments to make your experience much more comfortable.

Ice Packs

We provide all first time clients and returning client upon request with a reusable ice pack. If used prior to treatments, icing the skin will help to numb the area. We suggest icing the area afterwards, as it not only helps alleviate the burning sensation caused by the laser but also helps diminish swelling and helps the healing process.

Zimmer Cryo 6

One of the most common method for pain management in any laser business is going to be the Zimmer Cryo 6.  It emits freezing cold air onto the targeted area before, during and after laser treatments, effectively numbing and removing much of the discomfort and pain, while minimizing the risk of thermal injuries from the laser.  It reduces the pain and swelling, allowing for a faster recover time and less chances of blistering.

Numbing Creams

Many of our clients opt to use numbing cream prior to coming in for their laser treatments. Creams that have lidocaine or benzocaine as active ingredients are effective in numbing topically to create a less painful experience with lasering. At Vanishing Point, we offer Zensa Numbing Cream that is available for purchase.  It is a 5% Lidocaine, which is the highest percentage available over-the-counter without a prescription from a doctor.  If a client has a different numbing cream in mind that they would like to use, they are also welcome to do so.

Our technicians will ensure that the client receives proper instructions on how to apply their numbing cream effectively. We recommend taking a hot shower beforehand, if possible, to allow for more absorption. The cream should be applied to the skin at least 40-60 minutes prior to the appointment time, and tightly wrapped with a plastic wrap or Tegaderm to keep it in place (this is very important that it sits on the skin like that, as the numbing cream will not be as effective if left open).  We suggest wearing that dressing with the numbing cream into your appointment, and your technician will clean it off for you prior to starting.

Corny Jokes/Funny Stories

We are ALWAYS willing to go the extra mile with distracting our clients from the pain during the procedure.  Whether you want to hear some interesting laser stories, or are more interested in the nerdy/sciency side of how lasers work, our technicians would love to discuss those topics (or any other topics) with you! We try to keep things fun and relaxed, and whether you might need to take some breaks during the treatment, need complete silence, or want to chat to take your mind off of things, we are always here for you!

If you are considering starting your tattoo removal journey, but the thought of pain has kept you from it, rest assured that we go above and beyond to make the process as pleasant as possible! We start with free, no-pressure consultations for more information, book online to learn more!
