What is the R20 Method and Why We Don’t Do It

The R20 method of tattoo removal refers to a technique in which multiple passes are made over the tattoo in a single appointment with intervals of time in between. The “R” stands for “Rapid” or “Repeat” and the “20” is for 20 minutes in between treatments.  Typically 2-4 passes will be done during these types of treatments. The idea behind this protocol is that multiple treatments can be done the same day, and claims to remove tattoos faster, which is simply not the case.

Although this sounds very promising in theory, due to the trauma that can occur to the skin during these types of treatments, there is an increased risk of infection, more swelling and bruising, and a higher chance of skin discoloration (hypo- or hyper-pigmentation), textural changes and possible scarring. There also is not any evidence stating that this method yields any better results than waiting longer in between treatments.

When the ink particles are hit with the laser, they are shattered into smaller, more manageable pieces that the body will eliminate naturally. This does not happen immediately, rather, over following weeks to months is when the results will be seen. Our goal is to remove the tattoo with as little trauma to the skin as possible. This is why we like to wait a minimum of 8-12 weeks in between treatments. Not only is it safer for your skin, but also more effective.
